A regional antiquity: Salamis and the eastern coast
BEST Famagusta covers a region, so its ancient history cannot be reduced to one town. Salamis, the eastern coastline and later communities form a linked landscape. In Cypriot Christian tradition, Barnabas, a Cypriot apostle, and Paul arrived on the island in the 1st century; Barnabas is associated with Salamis in the island’s religious memory.
Greek myths of Aphrodite and the wider eastern Mediterranean belong to the cultural background of this coast. They should be read as mythic tradition, alongside archaeology rather than in place of it. The most useful way to visit is to connect individual sites and check the current conditions at each stop.
