Famagusta’s sister cities: municipal links beyond Cyprus
Famagusta Municipality’s twinning index records relationships with cities in Greece and Russia. Its dated entries run from Corfu in 1994 to two Piraeus phases listed under 2022, with a separate two-stage record for Mesolonghi.
A historical visitor guide based on the institutional sources linked below. Interpretation and practical reading notes by BEST.
1994–2010: six dated relationships
The municipal index lists Corfu in 1994, Patras in 1995, Salamina in 1998 and Taganrog in 2000. Athens follows in 2005 and Chania in 2010. These dates are the index’s own labels, rather than inferred dates for every associated event.
Mesolonghi: two distinct stages
For Mesolonghi, the index explicitly describes a first twinning phase in Mesolonghi on 6 April 2012 and a second on 6 October 2018. Those dates belong to Mesolonghi, not to the neighbouring Piraeus entries on the page.
Piraeus: entries labelled 2022
The index separately lists a first and a second phase with Piraeus, both labelled 2022. It does not supply exact days in the index. Keeping those entries distinct prevents the Mesolonghi dates from being mistakenly assigned to Piraeus.
Municipal history beyond landmarks
A sister-city record is another strand of civic history: it concerns relationships between institutions rather than the construction of a church, wall or monument. The list can help a visitor recognise names encountered in municipal accounts.
This index establishes the named relationships and its published dates. It does not document a continuing calendar of exchanges or the motives behind each agreement. Follow the municipality’s linked records for details of a particular relationship.
